“I believe in a play-based learning environment, where the R.E.C.E is the facilitator for learning and where children can learn and explore in a safe and supportive environment”.

Susie Wivell

My name is Susie wivell and I am a graduate from the Early Childhood Education program at The Mothercraft Institute for Early Learning.  I have been working in childcare for the past 15 years and have experienced working with all age groups.  I believe in play-based learning, where an Early Childhood Educator is the facilitator for learning and where children can learn, grow and explore in a safe and supportive environment.  I am proud to be part of Gibraltar Point Day Nursery.

“I feel so very lucky to work on the Toronto Islands – I think it is the perfect place to teach and learn, especially in the early years. Every day is a new discovery, just as childhood (and adulthood!) should be!”

Una Jevtic

My name is Una, and I am so happy to be in my second year as part of the Gibraltar Point Day Nursery team - or family rather, because that is what we are here.  I graduated from OISE with a Masters of Child Studies & Education at the University of Toronto (RECE and Primary/Junior OCT qualifications).  I have taught on the Toronto Island for 17 years now - it is one of my very favourite places in the world and is my home away from home - I am always so excited to share that love with each new group of children and parents. I have taught across the Early Years and Elementary levels, both in Toronto and England.  I love camping, spending time with my loved ones, writing, learning new languages (currently I speak Serbian - my mother tongue, French, and some Spanish), and my dog Mona.

Sonia Sommer

My name is Sonia Sommer, I was born in Ecuador and have lived in Canada for most of my life. I speak Spanish and love teaching children my home language. I live in the city with my husband Martin, we both love staying active and traveling. My career began in 1991 working as an Educational Assistant at Regent Park Duke of York. I then moved on to complete the Early Childhood Education Certificate at George Brown College in 1997.   I started working at Gibraltar Point Day Nursery in August 1997 and have loved every moment. I like to refer to the Gibraltar as my home away from home.  I’ve always been inspired by young children, so nurturing and educating young children has become my passion. I feel extremely fortunate to work on the island in a childcare centre where everyone is valued. My many years with Gibraltar Point Day Nursery has given me the opportunity to establish wonderful relationships with families and the community. For me every day here at Gibraltar is a day filled with exciting learning experiences and I’m always amazed at how much I learn from not just those around me specially our children.
